The Design of Speed

1999 Dodge Viper GTS American Club Racing (ACR)

In 1999 there was only one Dodge worthy of the attention of sportscar fans, and that was the mighty Viper, which had its debut in 1992. By '99, the second generation Viper had appeared, and Dodge upped the ante and made the ARC package available. This bumped the horsepower of the 8 liter V10 to 460 and dropped the weight by about 50 pounds, among other modifications.

There is no question that the Viper's design provides great eye appeal. The car is an absolute head turner on the street, in large part because of it's low, long and wide stance. The GTS version with it's fastback sloped rear backlight improved mightily on the roadster's styling. Tom Gale, who headed Chrysler's design group at the time, is credited with the beautiful lines. Gale, who also designed the retro-roadster Prowler, was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2012.
